Thanos named after Athanasios, a wealthy landowner, who came from Thana a village of Arcadia. Initially the village was located near the sea, but the inhabitants moved to the mainland, due to fear of piracy.
Agia Paraskevi, the three aisles, Basilica type church of the village, was built with expenses of the community in 1890 in the site of an older, parts of which are embedded in its masonry. The five arches of the exonarthex are relying on monolithic columns.
The beach of Thanos, with the strange rock formations that surround the large sandy beach, is one of the most beautiful beaches of Limnos.
