Agios Ioannis Prodromos in Kontias looks more like a fortress than a church, as it has cannons and turrets. Built in the 16th century, the church reflects the historical past and the Byzantine origin of the settlement.
In the naval guide of the notorious Turkish pirate Piri Reis in 1521, a castle in the gulf is mentioned , the "Paliokastellon of Kontea" of the Byzantines, one of the most important in Limnos throughout the duration of the Middle Ages and the Turkish occupation.
