Atsiki - See on Map

Το περίοπτο καμπαναριό εντυπωσιάζει.

The largest and most impressive bell tower in Limnos, belongs to the church of Agios Georgios in Atsiki. Ornament and pride for the village is this Parochial church, built in 1868 and has six vaulted openings in the exonarthex and eight diversified windows on the facade. The three-aisled basilica has neoclassical decoration, Corinthian capitals and Russian style hagiographies.

However, what’s immediately attracting the visitor’s eye is the prominent bell tower, which was built in 1928 by the architect and sculptor Giannis Fotiadis, using stone from Romanou, at the expense of the Association of the residents of Atsiki in New York being -650,000 drachmas at the time. It is the largest in Limnos, measuring 5 x 5 m, with elaborately carved capitals.

Originally they placed in the bell tower a bell of equally epic proportions, weighing 400 kilos which was not only heard throughout the village but, far away, to Agios Dimitrios, Dafni and Varos. An impressive fact at first, but apparently annoying after a while, so they were forced to downsize it!
