It is a small falcon that closely resembles the common kestrel, but is migratory and feeds almost exclusively on insects.
It's a globally threatened kind with extinction as populations declined dramatically in recent years due to the widespread use of pesticides. Its spread today in Greece includes Thessaly and Western Macedonia, while there are small fragmented populations in other parts of the country.
The first Lesser Kestrels are coming in late March to early April and their migration continues until early May. The fall migration is from late August to mid-October.
How to recognize it: Body size is about 30 cm. The male has blue-grey color on the head and tail while its back is ruddy. The belly is beige, with sporadic spots. Females have on their back with reddish streaks. Their claws are white.
