The village was named Plati, either because of the flat ground where it is lying, or by the wide outfall of the nearby bay (Platis Yialos), which was used as a port since the Middle Ages.
The Basilica type of St. George’s church, was built in 1857, but the exterior narthex and the bell tower are subsequent. A built-in relief with the figure of St. George and date 1808, indicates that an older temple existed in that location. In the inscription is mentioned the name of the craftsman from Constantinople, who had built also the temples of Atsiki and Varos. The church with its impressive carved iconostasis, is celebrating also at the St. Spyridon’s feast, whose picture was found in the cemetery of the village around 1870.
